Summary module description:

The module is designed to simulate project-based practice and develop students’ understanding of the different professional roles and practices through role-play. Students work in teams to propose sustainable design and construction solutions to Client Briefs. Each student will be required to take the role of a surveying or construction professional and will be required to carefully manage that role as part of a team.

Aims:

This module aims to stimulate students’ intellectual capacities and develop their critical thinking through an enquiry-based approach. Students engage in identifying, evaluating, synthesising and analysing clients’ briefs. Working in teams, assuming a defined professional role, students develop sustainable design, construction and technical proposals with associated financial schemes/costings. Proposals are developed to satisfy Clients’ requirements adhering to legal and environmental requirements. 

Assessable learning outcomes:

• The ability to identify and evaluate data used in the process of building design.


• Demonstrate knowledge of the sources of design information currently available.


• The ability to propose clear robust design, construction and technical proposals based on interpretation of a Client’s brief.


• The ability to present proposals in a variety of ways to Clients’ representatives. Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of surveying, construction and design professionals in the construction industry.


• Set the design, surveying, and construction processes within the context of constraints imposed by legal, financial and client requirements.


• Demonstrate knowledge of the design process in the particular with respect to drawing, computing and calculation.


• Demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding of sustainable design and construction paying particular attention to the concept of circular economy.


• The ability to respond to challenges arising from teamwork and group dynamics.


• The ability to apply knowledge and skill of digital technologies in the production of design drawings.

Additional outcomes:

• Transferable skills including oral presentations, report submission, problem solving, team working and project administration.


• An underlying theme for each of the above projects is the understanding of the dynamics of teamwork and differences between teams and group interactions.

• Design and functional considerations of building structures


• Design and functional considerations of building services


• Design of building redevelopment for inclusivity and sustainability

Global context:

Some elements of this module are positioned within a global context where students are required to consider design, construction, technical, legal, financial and sustainable considerations for an international Client’s brief.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

A combination of lectures, workshops, and tutorials are adopted for this module. Students work in teams supported by academic leads.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

Four equally weighted group assignments. Reports limited to 30 pages. Submission dates: Weeks 5 and 11 in Autumn and Spring Terms.

Video and  in-class group presentations.

Formative feedback provided in workshops.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Submission of alternative assignment(s) based on the originally failed project(s). The alternative assignment should be in the form of 3000 words each.
