Summary module description:

This module covers basic forecasting  techniques.

Aims:

This module aims first to improve the students’ weather map analysis skills and the provide an understanding of the basic 'bench' forecasting techniques followed by the production of a recorded TV -style forecast in collaboration with the NUIST weather station.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of this module the student will be able  to:

• Enhance the weather map analysis skills;


• Use a variety of basic forecasting methods using live data and to produce an effective forecast;


• Produce a TV-style forecast in a professional environment.

Additional outcomes:

Students will enhance their presentation skills through the professionally produced TV-style forecast. Students will complete a reflective assessment of their progress in developing their TV-style forecast.

Outline content:

The early sessions will involve lectures and practicals on the weather map analysis. The second half of the module focus on the production of 'bench' forecasts using 'live' data, working towards a ''live'' Tv-style Weather Forecast.

The forecast methods used are applicable in differing geographical areas.

The forecasting exercises consist of two 'real-time' weather forecasts.

Formative assessment methods:

One 'real -time' forecast exercise.

Weather map analysis exercise consist of synoptic systems, fronts and synoptic process.

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
