Summary module description:

This module is offered as one of the elective choices of the MA Leadership, a part-time programme for experienced leaders or managers with significant leadership responsibility.



 



The module focuses upon a range of organisational theories and concepts that affect the context of leadership and management in healthcare environments. Topics at the individual, group and organisational levels are covered. Each topic is examined with reference to its specific application to the healthcare environment. The module examines a series of issues that are faced by leaders in healthcare, and aims to develop knowledge that can be used to deal with challenges that arise in healthcare organisations.



 



The module is delivered via face-to-face workshops, group work, reflection and self-study. Programme members will spend time reflecting upon relevant theories and concepts in the context of their own leadership practice in the healthcare environment.


Aims:

This module aims to:




  1. Develop sensitivity to the range of factors that influence individuals and organisations in healthcare environments

  2. Develop an understanding of concepts and frameworks that can be used to analyse organisations in healthcare contexts

  3. Develop an analytical approach to understanding and solving problems that arise in organisations in healthcare contexts

  4. Encourage programme members to use relevant concepts and frameworks in their own practice in the healthcare context


Assessable learning outcomes:


  1. Knowledge of a range of issues that affect individuals and organisations in healthcare environments

  2. Knowledge of conceptual and theoretical approaches to analysing organisations in healthcare contexts

  3. Development of skills in analysing organisations in the healthcare context and communicating this analysis

  4. Application of concepts and theories to real life situations in the healthcare environment

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module involves two one-day workshops. Teaching methods include working in large groups with tutors as well as in smaller groups. Other learning activities take place on an individual basis. Teaching involves input from tutors as well as small and large group discussions.



 



Programme members will undertake detailed reflection about their own leadership practice in healthcare and how the issues explored affect this practice. An assignment will b e completed at the end of the module following the workshops. Programme members will have access to the virtual learning environment throughout the programme.



 



Programme members are encouraged to keep a personal learning log, paper or electronic, during both this module and the complete programme.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

The final assessment for this module involves a written assignment of 5,000 words submitted at the end of the module. This assignment will provide programme members’ reflections upon their learning, and will demonstrate the application of theory and concepts to practice. The assignment is the only piece of work assessed in this module.


Formative assessment methods:

Formative assessment will be provided on an ongoing basis through engagement with tutors and workshop attendance.

Post-graduate post-experience rules apply


Assessment requirements for a pass:

50%

One re-submission allowed, capped at 50%
