Summary module description:

The module will cover a range of approaches to supervision, with input from acknowledged experts in each of the fields, together with expert lead tutors who personally work as supervisors for organisations and individuals at the highest levels. The structure of the programme will be practical and experiential, with considerable opportunities to both receive and carry out supervision using the various models from the programme.

Assessment of the programme will consist of a final reflective assignment, supported by structured course work throughout the programme.

The Professional Certificate in Supervision is a Masters level qualification, carrying 30 Level 7 credits, awarded by Henley Business School at the University of Reading.

Aims:

This programme aims to:

• Develop the capacity of individuals to act as effective supervisors, in a one-to-one or group supervision capacity

• Build understanding of the role and purpose of supervision, appreciating the developmental, supportive and managerial elements of supervision

• Give students an awareness of theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of different supervision models and how they work

• Give students experience of the different models, both as supervisor and supervisee

• Develop the knowledge, skills and ability of individuals to work with ethical and professional dilemmas likely to arise in supervision

• Build an understanding on the role and value to supervision in organisations and an awareness of the organisational factors relevant to the supervision process

• Help students develop the ability to review and critically reflect upon their own practice

Assessable learning outcomes:

• Awareness of a range of supervision skills and models and the theory underpinning them

• Supporting and challenging

• Understanding the differences between supervision and other interventions 

• The role supervision plans in maintaining ethical practice and boundary management 

• Developing a high level of self-awareness around own reflective practice

• Being non-judgemental

• Applying a range of supervision practice to both individual and group situations, both within organisations and outside them

• Using supervision to aid the development and reflective practice

Additional outcomes:

• Able to carry out supervision both on an individual basis and group basis and build a personal reflective practice

Outline content:

Face to face taught workshop days. Self-managed study between workshops. Supervision practice during and between workshops. Programme content will include:

• An introduction and overview of supervision

• Advanced supervision practice 

• Systemic approach to supervision

• Group coaching supervision

• Mental health issues

• Ethical and legal considerations

• Psychotherapeutic and psychological concepts in supervision

• Role and value of supervision in organisations

• Organisational issues and awareness

• Integration and evaluation – developing your own model and style of supervision

• Developing your internal supervisor

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Three workshops, over 12 months as an Open programme.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

One 5,000-word assignment This is submitted alongside a portfolio of supporting material, including the personal learning log, supervision log, reflective assignments, client and tutor feedback. This additional material forms supporting evidence.

Formative assessment methods:

Two pieces of written format assessment, each of 1500 words, completed during the module with written feedback.

Penalties in line with Post-graduate flexible programmes.
