This module aims to teach students some elements of the Latin language and give them skills to read Latin at an elementary level.

This module aims to teach students some elements of the Latin language and give them skills to read Latin at an elementary level.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:
- translate simple passages of Latin at an elementary level;
- understand and use - significant elements of Latin grammar and vocabulary.
- translate very simple English sentences into Latin
Additional outcomes:
The module also encourages the development of skills useful for working in groups. In addition, students will be introduced to some aspects of ancient Latin literature and culture.
Outline content:
The course will proceed by instruction in grammar and practice in translation. The text used is Latin to GCSE Books 1 & 2 (Henry Cullen & John Taylor, Bloomsbury) We will aim to cover chapters 1-7.17, plus irregular verbs from 8.28 and 8.29..
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The course will be taught in four seminars each week. Students will be encouraged to participate in class activities and discussion.

Coursework:
One 45-minute in-class, unseen closed book translation test in week 7 of the Autumn term. This will contribute 10% of the overall mark.
Two in-class tests, each an hour in length and each contributing 30% of the overall module mark. The first test will be in week 1 of the Spring term, the second in week 10 of the Spring term. Content will be: 2 seen passages for translation; questions on grammar; unseen sentences for translation from Latin to English and from English to Latin.
One one-hour in-class test administered in the second or third week of the summer term. This contributes 30% of the overall mark. Content to be: unseen passage for comprehension; unseen passage for translation and a small number of English to Latin sentences.
There will be at least one revision class in the first week of summer term.
There will also be frequent tests and homework assignments on word-forms, vocabulary, syntactical constructions, and translation.
These are regarded as formative only and will not contribute to the final assessment.

Penalties for late submission:
The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
