Summary module description:

The module is an individual student project consisting of the undertaking of the design of a specified development project and, for that project,  

EITHER A Design cost plan.

OR, A method statement and programme of operations

OR, A report on sustainability issues 



EITHER An Elemental cost plan.

OR, a method statement and programme of operations

OR, a report on sustainability issues


Aims:

To give practical experience in the basic construction management techniques related to the current practice of EITHER construction cost management, (quantity surveying) orOR construction site management orOR sustainability issues related to design and construction.


Assessable learning outcomes:

Based upon identified built facility and a clients brief of requirements, The student will also develop key documents expected from a refurbishment scheme for the building with drawings and specification.construction cost manager (quantity surveying) or construction site manager or sustainability issues related to design and construction.

Outline content:

Students will be provided with aan outline design brief for a proposed building facility, for which,and working individually with tutorial guidance, the students will produce, amongst others:

1. The detailed design brief

2. The outline design

3. An initial stage cost forecast.

4. Detailed design of selected elements

5a. EITHER; A design cost plan

5b. OR; a method statement and programme of site operations

5c. OR; a report on sustainability issues


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Students will undertake the project individually with tutorial guidance and brief lectures on key aspects.

STAGE A Interim Submission of project portfolio (Autumn term) – 10%

EITHER STAGE B/C/D Interim Submission of project portfolio (Spring term) – 20%

FINAL Submission of project portfolio (Spring term) – 70%


Formative assessment methods:

Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
