PY2SD1 Social & Differential Psychology 1
Aims:
To familiarise students with theory and research on a selection of core topics in social and differential psychology.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students will be able to:
- Describe key areas of research in social psychology
- Critically evaluate some pieces of relevant research and techniques discussed in lectures
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of topics within social psychology, in the form of a multiple choice exam and weekly continuous assessment

Outline content:
Topics include social cognition; social perception; attitudes and attitude change; intergroup relations; prejudice and discrimination; the self.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
a) Lectures on social psychology.
(b) Online discussion forum following lectures
(c) Recommended reading in social psychology.
(d) Continuous online assessment of students' understanding of the material covered in lectures to support learning and preparation for summer exam

Summative assessment- Examinations:
The 1-hour Summer exam is comprised of multiple-choice questions (70%).
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
This module is assessed by coursework (30%) and a multiple choice exam sat in the summer term (70%).
Coursework involves continuous online assessment of students' understanding of the material covered in lectures.
Formative assessment methods:
Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 40% overall
Reassessment arrangements:
Reassessment is by examination in August/September
