Summary module description:

This module consists of an in-depth research project in a specialist area of Pharmacy or related disciplines.


Aims:

To enable students to conduct research projects successfully. To perform a programme of research to answer an hypothesis or research question and analyse the results. To perform statistical or qualitative analysis of the data and reach a conclusion about the results. To write up the results of the research in the form of a scientific report suitable for publication.


Assessable learning outcomes:

Students should be able to:




  • Investigate a relevant research question of their own devising

  • Demonstrate the ability to critically appraise the relevant scientific literature and the results that they generate.

  • Critically analyse and interpret data

  • Produce a scientific report including methodology and results, with a reasoned discussion of results in the context of the subject area


Additional outcomes:

Students will develop time management and problem-solving skills.


Outline content:

A topic related to cellular and molecular neuroscience, formulation design and analysis or pharmacy practice will be chosen in collaboration with an academic supervisor(s) in a suitable research area. Training in specific laboratory techniques or other methodologies needed for the project will be provided. Students will work on their own research project with close supervision and regular meetings to provide feedback and to discuss results. Students will communicate their project via an oral presentation describing their project hypothesis and data.

Teaching and learning methods used will include regular meetings with supervisor, research group meetings and/or guided research activities.

Oral assessment and presentation: An oral presentation will be assessed in week 34.

Report: A written project report will be submitted in week 1.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

Students must achieve an overall weighted average mark of 50% to pass this module.

Reassessment will by resubmission of a project report.
