Summary module description:

This module aims to build on PMMCT1 through integration of systems considering polypharmacy, co-morbidities and advanced clinical therapeutics.  Topics will include pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, treatment, monitoring and person-centred care considerations to deliver effective clinical pharmacy practice.  Students will undertake 50% of the module as experiential learning to embed communication, consultation and medicines optimisation knowledge, skills and behaviours.  Students will be supported to reflect on their experiences by developing a professional portfolio of experiential learning which will be used throughout the MSc programme.  This module will be studied at the University of Reading and within local clinical pharmacy healthcare providers.

Aims:

Assessable learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

1. Discuss the aetiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring for the stated disease states and therapeutic topics


2. Describe the role healthcare practitioners can take in providing pharmaceutical care for patients with the stated disease states and therapeutic topics


3. Understand the non-medicine treatment and advice that can use used to improve patients’ quality of life with the stated disease states an d therapeutic topics


4. Describe how evidence-based medicine supports decision making for the stated disease states and therapeutic topics

Skills

1. Critically appraise literature to formulate treatment recommendations for individual patient cases


2. Demonstrate safe and effective communication skills with patients and other healthcare professionals


3. Demonstrate ability to prioritise and justi fy treatment recommendations

Additional outcomes:

Outline content:

This module will focus on embedding advanced clinical therapeutics knowledge within experiential learning.  Advanced clinical therapeutics topics include oncology, haematology, paediatrics, palliative care, and advanced renal and hepatic disease.  In addition, managing co-morbidities, polypharmacy and deprescribing topics will be covered.  PMMPS1 content on concordance and shared decision making will be built upon to provide practical approaches for values-based practice and pe rson-centred care.

Global context:

This module will highlight the differences in international healthcare practice, supporting students to consider the International Pharmaceutical Federation’s Global Competency Framework in their local context.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

This module will use a range of teaching and learning methods including face to face lectures, workshops and tutorials.  In addition, there will be simulated learning to support communication skills development.  The remaining 50% of the time will be experiential learning, embedded in local healthcare providers, observing healthcare practice, researching pharmaceutical care plans and then reflecting on these patient cases with tutors, peers and/or other clinicians.

Summative assessment- Examinations:

1. Oral presentation of one pharmaceutical care plan

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

1. One written pharmaceutical care plan


2. Experiential learning portfolio

Formative assessment methods:

1. Presentation of pharmaceutical care plans prior to inclusion in experiential learning portfolio


2. Workplace-based assessments during experiential learning

Assessment requirements for a pass:

1. The oral presentation and written pharmaceutical care plan must be passed at 50% with all essential criteria met


2. The experiential learning portfolio must be passed at 50% and contain all mandatory content

Reassessment arrangements:

Reassessment will be arranged promptly to not delay the next module’s experiential learning component.  Individualised timings may be required depending on the specific requirements for reassessment.
