Summary module description:

This module explores and facilitates questions of identity, growth and development and through a process of self-awareness and reflection, requires engagement in dialogue (intrapersonal and inter-personal) that informs personal and professional development during the programme of study. It is introduced in the MSc Business and Management Research programme, and a further report on reflection is required in the DBA programme.

Aims:

The module is designed to enable programme members to:

  • Develop enhanced self-awareness, critical self-reflection, a commitment and capability for both collaborative and independent continuous learning, and relevant personal development.

The key objectives are to:

  • facilitate the process of on-going development during the programme and beyond

  • develop self-awareness about the epistemology of personal development

  • understand the significance of any tensions experienced in the development of scholarship, research and management consultancy skills alongside existing practice

  • encourage reflective thought in relation to theory and practice in order to contribute to a community of practice in the development of knowledge

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that programme members will be able to demonstrate their ability to:

  • Build on their self-awareness with regard to approaches to learning, research paradigms, attitudes to knowledge production and ontological and epistemological world views

  • Exercise reflective thinking and exploration of deeper levels of self-knowledge

Additional outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that programme members will be able to demonstrate their ability to:

  • Write reflectively and fluently to explore motivating and limiting areas of personal development

Outline content:

The key topics covered include:

  • A Personal Action research Project is developed based on personal, teaching and consultancy targets agreed by the programme member. The Project aims to develop reflective thinking and action planning towards self-identified goals and personal development objectives.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module teaching is structured around sessions in the introductory Research and Personal Development and Qualitative Techniques Workshop (in the MSc in BMR), which involves a combination of lectures, group and individual activities including meetings with a Mentor. In addition, programme members are expected to undertake guided self-study, including set readings and tutor-monitored learning journal entries (or equivalent, for direct entrants to the DBA who have not completed the MSc in Bus iness and Management Research). This leads into the DBA phase where this work is developed into the more deeply reflective Action Learning Project.
