Aims:
The aim of module is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop advanced research skills through the design and execution of an individual research project based in the workplace.

Advanced concepts and techniques in a scientific discipline(s) relevant to their workplace
Background scientific, technical, commercial and policy literature of relevance to their research project topic and its wider field of study
Theory and practice of research methods and study design within relevant ethical and governance frameworks
Project planning and management
Ability to think logically and e
valuate critically research and advanced scholarship in their discipline
Critical evaluation of methodologies and their limitations
Interpretation of data using appropriate statistical tools
Additional outcomes:
Students will develop a wide range of transferable skills:
- Critical evaluation and dissemination of information from a variety of sources
- Design and execution of a research project
- Effective communication of scientific information and experimental conclusions in oral and written format with scientific rigour
- Management of resources as appropriate to achieve project aims
Outline content:
Students will propose a project and develop and perform it under the supervision of an academic and industrial supervisor. The research will normally be carried out over a period of 6-12 months.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module will involve predominantly self-directed learning supported by academic and industry supervisors via regular meetings (at least monthly).

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 50% in the project report.
Reassessment arrangements:
In the event of a student failing the module they will be reassessed based on resubmission of the project report that addresses feedback of the assessors. Module marks are capped at 50% for passes at 2nd attempt.
