Summary module description:

In this part practical module, students will work individually in the studios developing personal art practice using traditional and non-traditional art materials, and digital technology as appropriate. Through a period of sustained independent and shared practice, students will articulate intentions and elaborate personal meanings as indicated within their developing work.

The accompanying theory programme will introduce students to specific issues in art (including gender and cultural), and highlight post second world war social changes and events which have underpinned trends in art and continue to inform and influence art practice and art education today.

Aims:

  1. To critically analyse different music-specific curricula and to reflect on how these can be made relevant and motiving for the learner

  2. To enhance research and professional skills by appraising resources for the music-specific curriculum

  3. To develop leadership skills as a music co-ordinator

Assessable learning outcomes:

On successful completion, students will:

  1. Appraise the design of structured schemes of work built around creative music making by examining how these support different types of learners in music

  2. Be able to synthesise their musical knowledge to the aims and objectives of current government, professional and academic thinking in the field of education

  3. Be able to demonstrate an effective use of professional and research skills in the appraisal of  curriculum design

Additional outcomes:

The module provides the opportunity for students to continue to develop and inform their own art practice through an engagement with contemporary issues in art.

Outline content:

This module will continue to facilitate the students’ developing art practices as artist teachers. It will also introduce students to a range of issues and developments which have influenced the course of contemporary art from the mid twentieth century to the present day.
