Summary module description:
An assessed project which requires a description and analysis of a real project and the identification of an academic research topic which is tasked by a case study applicable to the described and analysed project.

Aims:
To consolidate the vocational training and practice received by the student in employment and relate it meaningfully to the academic theories and techniques covered in the modules of the course.

Assessable learning outcomes:
The selection, explanation and application, using appropriate, rigorous academic techniques, of selected theories in economics, management or law to a selected process or technique experienced by the student in his/her practice in the cost management of development, design or construction of built facilities.

Additional outcomes:
Facility with the use of case study techniques to test academic theories.

Outline content:
The student will prepare a report, (10,000 words or equivalent) which will identify, describe and evaluate a construction project or property development project or property management operation. The project will be one on which the student has been directly engaged during their employment or to which they have access to detailed information. The report will: 1. Fully describe the project or operation identifying the key physical and economic characteristics, the management system used and the r ole and function of the participants. 2. Analyse the project or operation in terms of the following aspects showing how these aspects influenced the choices made during the project and the achievement of its aims. a. Economic and financial factors b. Management and procurement systems used. c. The contractual framework. d. The use and application of cost management techniques 3. Analyse an academic topic of the student's own choice, which will be illustrated, explained and tested with reference to the project detailed in the report under points 1 & 2 above. The project will be used as a case study for the analysis and testing of the academic topic selected.

Students will be individually tutored in the selection and development of the project.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
To pass students must attain an average mark of 50%
