Summary module description:
This module introduces the fundamental concepts of building services including acoustic, lighting, drainage, and water system design together with principals of heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
In addition, students will be able to further apply their acquired knowledge in the module of “Design project 2 (CE2-DPR)” that will be delivered in the spring term as well as the module of “Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Design (CE3HVA)”in part 3.
Aims:
The aim of this module is to provide students with the principles of building services including acoustic, lighting, drainage, and water system design together with fundamentals of heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:
- Describe the basic laws of light and sound,
- Explain the principal mechanism and techniques for heating, ventilation and air conditioning,
- Explain the factors associated with the human response to heat, air movement and comfort
- conditions.
- Determine the design flow rate and pressure drops in water systems,
- Calcul ate the level of illuminance on surfaces,
- Determine the flow rate of waste water together with the size of drain stack and common branch discharge pipes,
- Compare the main approach for water distribution in buildings,
- Formulate the simplified approach of heat loss in buildings,
- Appraise the principal heating, ventilation and air condition systems in terms of energy and environmental impacts.
Additional outcomes:
- To explain the technology used in the services of simple low-rise buildings,
- To describe the mechanisms to reducing the risk of Legionella in building services,
- To explain the approaches for back flow protection in the drainage system,
- To describe the techniques for flood protection in the drainage system of buildings,
- To compare the characteristics of the main sources of artificial lighting.
Outline content:
- Physics of light and methods of calculating lighting levels in buildings,
- Physical principles of sound, its transmission in rooms and noise levels,
- laws of light and sound,
- Fundamental of drainage, water supply, and water distribution systems in buildings,
- Fundamentals of heating, cooling and ventilation systems,
- Principles of heat loss in buildings.
Global context:
The skills and knowledge that students will acquire from this module have global applications.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Teaching in this module will be by means of lectures and tutorials. These sessions will be complemented by guided independent study.

Summative assessment- Examinations:
Summative assessment by examination will be based on a 2-hour examination in May/June.
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
There will be a set exercise test that will be assessed summatively and should be submitted online by the end of week 11 of the autumn term.
Formative assessment methods:
This module includes formative assessment of a set of exercises and problem-solving practices about building services that will be discussed in tutorial sessions.
Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:
- where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
- where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark 0f 40%
Reassessment arrangements:
Students who have failed in their first attempt will be provided with an opportunity to re-sit in a two-hour re-examination.
