Summary module description:
ONLY AVAILABLE ON THE AHEP PROGRAMME.
To provide students with an opportunity to undertake either a dissertation or a work-based research project enabling them to analyse critically and in depth a specific topic, chosen by students, within the realm of their studies on Leadership Organisations and Behaviour; to display the ability to carry out primary and secondary research.
Aims:
The aims of the dissertation or work-based project are to:
· develop students’ capacity for independent research, engagement with core literature, self-reflection and critical analysis;
· deepen their knowledge of a specialised topic within their programme of study;
· understand how to collect primary or secondary data and to critically analyse these
· Interpret, evaluate, discuss and conclude the findings consistently with the literature or problem selected.
Assessable learning outcomes:
· formulating a relevant, coherent and clearly defined research project;
· drawing on their knowledge of research methods, appropriate to projects in Leadership Organisations and Behaviour, to analyse complex issues in a critical fashion;
· generating sources of information and ideas;
· collecting appropriate data;
· providing a systematic and carefully structured analysis of the information collected;
· Interpreting, discussing and drawing of relevant conclusions from the analysis and relating these to the existing literature
Additional outcomes:
Students will develop the ability to research on their own initiative and learn to organise their work on a longer-term project within a tight schedule. The research project will also offer the ability to demonstrate originality in the chosen research sphere.
Outline content:
A supervised, though largely independent problem-based research project of 8,000-10,000 words on a leadership or organisational behaviour-themed subject, preferably arising out of the student’s programme of study on the AHEP BSc programme or their professional role. In normal circumstances, the Negotiated Learning project will be completed over a period of circa 18 months from first contact with an allocated supervisor to the delivery of the finished project.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This is an independent research project. Student support will vary based on the needs of the individual, but the following is indicative of what a student might expect:
· Assess and give feedback on the student’s proposed research question
· Review a plan/skeleton and then one section up to the larger of 1,000 words or 10% of the final project length.
· Engage in skype calls across the piece every 3-4 month s on average.
· Respond to email queries within reason; with a guideline response within 72 hours during a Monday-Friday working week.
· Assessing the work as first marker.
Students will also have access to moderated chat rooms for peer-peer interaction and or posing and receiving general feedback from peers and moderators.

Penalties for late submission:
Penalties for late submission on this module are in accordance with the arrangements as laid out in the programme guide.
Assessment requirements for a pass:
Module pass mark of 40%
Reassessment arrangements:
Re-submission of the project/dissertation by an agreed deadline, subject to fulfilling the pass criteria on other modules so that a re-assessed Negotiated Learning module submission, capped at 40% would still enable the student to achieve a pass overall.
