Summary module description:

An introduction to the skills and contexts of professional practice in graphic communication.

Aims:

To develop professional skills through an understanding of professional practice, relevant craft skills, and competence in design and print technology; and to gain a basic understanding of professional design contexts prior to careers learning.

Assessable learning outcomes:

• To research and understand modern print and finishing technologies that go beyond conventional offset lithography, and beyond basic trimming and folding.


• To demonstrate effective group work, research process and project management


• To design an effective, information-rich, large-format poster


• To prepare and deliver an innovative, professional presentation that shares your accumulated knowledge with a room full of graphic designers


• To make appropriate use of the available range of project management tools

Additional outcomes:

• Work effectively as part of a project team


• Prepare for careers learning in Part 3 through TY2PRP coursework


• Prepare to undertake professional assignments in the Department

Outline content:

Topics will include:

• Job management, costing, and workflow


• Pre-press operations


• Presswork and proofing


• Finishing


• Specification


• Communication with suppliers/printers

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

In the Autumn term, workshops will provide an overview of print production processes and procedures. A field trip to a production/printing house will provide an opportunity to gain more insight into printing processes. Students undertake a production project in small teams that includes researching production methods and using a project management tool to support their process, developing a report and a poster on particular methods, preparing files for production and a group presentation of their research.

Coursework consists of a production project that is completed in small teams. The teams will work with a project management tool, research and develop a report and a poster presentation about production methods. Students will also prepare their posters for professional printing and submit them with an accompanying handover document.  

Formative assessment methods:

Each group will receive formative feedback through an online project management tool.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A mark of 40% overall.

Coursework must be resubmitted by August/September; exact date to be notified.
