Summary module description:

This module looks at asset management from an investor, landlord and tenant perspective. It deals with investor and corporate asset performance strategies, landlord and tenant relationships and public sector asset management.? Other topics covered relate to planning, budgeting and real estate corporate governance. 


Aims:

The module explores both practical and strategic aspects of real estate management, primarily for commercial property, and examines innovation and change in this area. The subject is considered from the perspective of the various stakeholders (owners, tenants and owner/occupiers). Underpinning the module is the application of key management and business concepts to real estate advice and real estate management. 


Assessable learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to: 





  • apply management concepts to the business of real estate; 




  • critically assess how real estate management can add value; 




  • conceptualise key issues facing real estate managers; 




  • evaluate how these issues impact on practice in different sectors and from different perspectives. 




Additional outcomes:



  • Enhance oral and communication skills through discussions and presentations in seminar sessions; 




  • Develop independent learning abilities through preparation for weekly seminars; 







  • Develop report/essay writing skills through the coursework; 




  • Enhance the capacity to read complex published material in a critical fashion. 




Outline content:

Key aspects of real estate management will be covered such as: 





  • Strategic asset management for investors, corporates and the public sector; 




  • Commercial lease management; 




  • Facilities management; 







  • Active asset management; 




  • Environmental issues. 




Global context:

The issues covered have international significance. 


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module will comprise lectures, class tutorials and problem solving workshops. The exam will act as a consolidating and integrating vehicle for the taught material.
