Summary module description:
This is an e-learning module that introduces vocabulary, concepts and methods that are typically encountered in the study of property investment. It can be used as a stand-alone module or by those intending to complete the IPF Certificate in Property Investment. It is suitable for persons without substantive property investment experience, but others with such experience may find it useful as a refresher. The format enables participants to manage their study time efficiently and with flexibility, at distance.
Aims:
This module aims to introduce property markets and the UK property investment industry to those wanting to know more about this industry. It aims to set property investment in a microeconomic and a macroeconomic context, and it aims to compare property to other mainstream asset classes.
Assessable learning outcomes:
• Demonstrate knowledge of the terminology and concepts associated with investment in general and property investment;
• Identify fundamental characteristics of real property as an investment asset;
• Understand the economic context in which investment occurs, including the significance of accounting and commercial regulation for investment activity;
• Demonstrate awareness of the main sources of finance for property investment and the principal types of property investment (direct and indirect);
• Use the vocabulary of real estate investment accurately and appropriately;
• Identify factors that influence the value and investment worth of property, and appropriate valuation and appraisal methodologies.

• Key concepts and terminology associated with investment and investment assets;
• Overview of the microeconomic and macroeconomic context in which investment occurs;
• The investment and financial characteristics of real property, including comparison to other asset classes;
• Major participants in real estate finance and investment;
• Tools and techniques for the measurement of value and performance;
• Property finance and funding;
• Indirect investment in real estate, including property derivative products.
Global context:
The module is principally focused on the UK property market, although conceptual material is relevant to other mature property investment markets around the globe.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This is an online module which is fully supported by Canvas, a secure Virtual Learning Environment. The module is made available to students from the 1st of each month with a duration of 3 months.
