Social & Differential Psychology

Aims:

To familiarize students with theory and research on core topics in social and differential psychology. 

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module the student will be able to:

• Describe key areas of research in social psychology, intelligence and individual differences • Critically evaluate pieces of relevant research and techniques discussed in lectures

• Demonstrate in-depth understanding of specific areas within social psychology, intelligence and individual differences, in the form of an essay assignment and written examination

• Demonstrate a broad understanding of topics within social psychology, intelligence and individual differences, through weekly continuous assessment

Outline content:

Topics in social and differential psychology include: social cognition; social perception; attitudes and attitude change; intergroup relations, prejudice and discrimination; the self; self-regulation and motivation; aggression; pro-social behaviour; intelligence; emotional intelligence and emotion regulation. Individual differences within a number of these domains will also be addressed.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

(a) Lectures on social psychology, intelligence and individual differences.

(b) Online discussion board following lectures.

(c) Recommended reading in social psychology, intelligence and individual differences.

(d) Seminar groups will be organised in these areas. Seminar groups provide the opportunity to discuss topics in social psychology, intelligence and individual differences, and to research and write an essay. 

Summative assessment- Examinations:

1 hr 30 mins exam 

The 1 hr 30 mins Summer Exam will require you to answer 2 questions on topics covered in the module. 

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

This module is assessed by a combination of coursework (50%), and summer examination (50%). 



Coursework includes 1 essay, with supporting seminar (30%) and continuous online assessment of your understanding of the material covered in lectures (20%). 

Formative assessment methods:

 A formative assignment will be set in the first seminar.
