Summary module description:

This module extends students' understanding  and application of medical sciences relevant to speech and language pathology and comprises courses  on Neurology Audiology, and Orthodontics.

Aims:
The aims of this module are: to introduce the student to the structure and function of systems of the human body and the pathology associated with them; to explore the role of other health disciplines in the diagnosis and management of associated disorders; and to provide an overview of the contribution this can make to disorders of speech and/or language. This knowledge forms a basis for the understanding of pathological conditions that cause or co-exist with speech and language and/or swallowing disorders.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of this module it is expected that the student will be able to: • Identify the structures of the mouth, face, dentition and occlusion and evaluate the treatment methods for modifying facial growth • Discriminate those aspects of oral surgery that have consequences for speech • Describe and evaluate the function of the ear, the central and peripheral nervous system on speech • Evaluate the measurements of hearing, diagnostic audiology, hearing aids, on adult and paediatric aural rehabilitation • Demonstrate systematic knowledge of gross anatomy of the brain and how brain function and structure can be captured, instrumentally •  Understand the nature of neural tissues and neurotransmitters and how they are affected in neurological disorders and disease• Demonstrate knowledge of the neuropathologies of a range of neurological disorders with a particular focus on those affecting speech and language and swallowing and the neurological treatments of these disorders

Additional outcomes:
Students will learn to integrate their medical knowledge into their studies of communication disorders. This knowledge will inform their clinical practice. They will present data and write succinct and objective reports for other professionals.

Outline content:

This module consists of three separate strands covering Orthodontics, Audiology and Neurology:  Orthodontics and oral surgery; the study of structures of the mouth, dentition, occlusion, cleft palate, prosthetic dentistry;  Audiology; the measurement of hearing, diagnostic audiology, hearing aids; Neurology: Brain anatomy, function and structure; Types and causes of brain injury, including infarction, haemorrhage, contusion, diffuse damage, tumour, atrophy, post pathology; neuroimaging, cortical and subcortical brain functions; white and grey matter; neurons and neural functioning;  Neurovascular coupling; Neurological conditions including motor neuron disease, epilepsy, Huntington’s disease; Parkinson’s disease.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
There will be 38 hours of medical teaching delivered as lectures.
