Outline content:
Welcome to the Entrepreneurship elective. This is a taught module consisting of a one-day workshop and assessed by a group presentation and an individual report. The aim is to introduce entrepreneurship as a mindset and an apparatus of tools for innovation.
Entrepreneurship is about individuals being able to discover, create or recognise new opportunities by generating business ideas. Business ideas can be converted into business ventures. Several of them might be successful – others not. To be successful, entrepreneurs should continuously validate their business models.
This module guidance document provides an introduction to the workshop and specifies the requirements of the elective. The workshop is designed to help programme members develop an understanding of the use of entrepreneurial tools, such as the Business Model Canvas and lean-thinking approach, and to stimulate the development of an entrepreneurial mindset.
The key topics covered in this elective are:
entrepreneurial opportunities – setting the scene
entrepreneurial opportunity – recognition and identification
evaluating opportunities – think like an entrepreneur
empathy and design thinking
the Business Model Canvas
entrepreneurial value proposition
lean thinking and lean start-up
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The learning transmission will be primarily through the workshop. Before the workshop, participants will be provided with selected reading material on entrepreneurship. This will include insights into the relevance of entrepreneurs in generating economic wealth or social impact through their product and/or process innovation. The one-day workshop will focus on the use of entrepreneurial tools in practice, and has a group task related to ‘Spotting and developing a business opportunity’ running through the day. At the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to present their business idea before a panel of the Henley Centre for Entrepreneurship (see Assessment, below, and the separate assignment question document).

Summative assessment- Examinations:
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
The one-day workshop will focus on the use of entrepreneurial tools in practice, and has a group task related to ‘Spotting and developing a business opportunity’ running through the day.
A team presentation will take place at the end of the day. It applies your learning from the Entrepreneurship elective to your business ideas. The team presentation will be performed on the day of the workshop before a panel of the Henley Centre for Entrepreneurship who will assess it (70%). Participation in the workshop is mandatory, as the team presentation is the main component for the assessment. An individual report (30%) based on individual reflections concerning the team project (maximum length 500 words) should be delivered within one week after the day of the workshop and will be subject to a pass/fail assessment.
Formative assessment methods:

The team presentation will be graded according to the marking scheme for the MBA (see Programme Handbook). To achieve a pass, students require a mark of 50% or above for the team presentation.
The individual report is worth 30% of the overall mark and will be graded as a pass or fail; i.e. by achieving a pass for the individual report, students will be awarded the entire 30% towards the overall mark for this module.
Moderation will take place to ensure that consistency is maintained over time and that the quality of assignments meets externally validated benchmarks.
Reassessment arrangements:
Normal rules of failure as detailed in your Programme Handbook apply. If you fail to achieve a mark of at least 50% for the team presentation, you will be required to submit an individual essay on a topic covered in the elective.
