Summary module description:

What am I going to do when my course ends, and how am I going to achieve it?  This module has been designed to help Accounting, Informatics and Business Management students answer those two questions, and empower them to take the actions required.  It’s a suite of sessions that pays close attention to the general pathways Business Management, Accounting and Informatics students tend to take, and their aspirations as expressed during pre-sessional career activities & induction surveys. Students will choose this the mix of custom-made sessions that best suit their stage in life and supplement them with the open careers programmes offered at the University, the online content on the Henley Careers Blackboard site and 1-2-1 careers consultations.


Aims:

Understand the main career paths directly related to the degree (e.g.



Informatics - Data Consultant, Functional Data Analyst, Business Analyst (client-side and provider



Accounting - Auditor, Management Accountant, Professional Practice



Business & Management - Operational & Project Management, HR, Marketing, Start-Ups),



and the scope of other options available.



Understand the ways into/continue in the chosen career path, and how to find these opportunities, (either in the UK, back home, or in another country).



Understand the steps required to secure the opportunities, and how to succeed in them. E.g. Networking, CVs, Applications, Interviews, Assessment Activities, Pursuing Promotion/Career Broadening Activities.



Increase understanding of self and their strengths, and use this information to help inform appropriate career choices and personal development plans.



Identify short and longer term career goals and formulate a personal action plan that will help them achieve those goals.



Develop skills and techniques that will help them perform both on the course and in their career, e.g. Team Working, Inter-cultural Communications.


Assessable learning outcomes:


  • Career-related action plan;

  • Understanding of concepts regarding application and selection, and where to go for more information;

  • Increased understanding of the own strengths and drivers, and how those impact on those around them.


Additional outcomes:


  • Broad understanding of the career opportunities available to them and how career paths change over time;

  • Increased understanding or, and ability to deploy, key employability skills such as team working & communication;

  • Confidence to approach careers specialists about a range of career related activities.

Global context:

Overall, the students will be looking to work in a large number of countries following their Masters, and the module will be delivered with this in mind, concentrating on similarities and major differences, and highlighting further reading for other differences.
