This module, available only to those on mathematics undergraduate programmes, aims to provide experience of working in industry, government, research or other appropriate organisations.

The ability to undertake a work placement, possibly as part of a team.
Additional outcomes:
Depending on the placement, there may be the opportunity to learn new computing packages or new mathematical / statistical techniques.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Training takes place in the workplace, usually including attendance at Continuing Professional Development courses as well as mentoring by a line manager. Actual contact hours will vary according to the placement and employer.

Satisfactory completion of the placement is determined by the student's progress throughout the year plus reports submitted by the student and by their employer Those who do not complete the Placement year satisfactorily will be permitted to continue to Part 3 of the non-placement version of the relevant degree programme.
Formative assessment methods:
Students receive mentoring and guidance from a local supervisor, and have contact with their personal tutor and the Department's Placement Tutor.
