Summary module description:
This module is taken by students on the Semester Study Abroad who are placed in an exchange university to study in spring and summer terms only.
Aims:
One of the aims of the term study abroad is to increase students’ skills and knowledge in the field of linguistics. This module aims to provide students with opportunities for achieving this aim alongside students of the host institution who are studying linguistics. A further aim is to provide students with the opportunity to broaden their experience of linguistics as conceived and taught in another culture. This module also aims to provide students with the opportunity to monitor, in an explicit and systematic fashion, their progress in learning and using the foreign language in naturalistic settings.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:
- provide explicit information on the rate and nature of their progress in communicative abilities in the foreign language;
- organise their knowledge and articulate arguments effectively in speech and writing.
- compare and contrast cultural patterns of communication between the home and host cultures.
Additional outcomes:
The module also aims to encourage the development of the students’ awareness of foreign cultures, through improved communicative effectiveness.
Outline content:
Topics of study will include: intercultural communication, language learning and teaching, different areas of theoretical and applied linguistics, language and communication, language, technology and media., among others.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Lectures with seminar-style discussion and guided independent study. There may be other teaching and learning methods in the host institutions.

Summative assessment- Examinations:
This will vary for each student depending on the final choice of courses and on the institution.
Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
The overall module mark will be the cumulative average of grades earned at the host institution. Each grade will be converted to the Reading grading scheme as determined by the University and will be the overall mark for the module.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 40% overall.
Reassessment arrangements:
If the overall mark for module is less than 40%, a written assignment to be determined by the module convenor will be submitted by 12 noon on the third Friday in August in the year the course is taken.
