Summary module description:

This module builds upon previous research into contemporary art practice. In consultation with tutors, students will research into the art practices of the 21st century and produce a written study.  Students will also continue to develop personal art practice, informed by the written study research.

Aims:

• To gain critical insight and knowledge into an area of contemporary art practice through appropriate research

• To provide a coherent synthesis of research findings from a wide range of primary sources

• To articulate research findings clearly and effectively

• To produce a written study and a presentation of practical work in accordance with the course regulations.

Assessable learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will:

• Demonstrate a substantive knowledge of and critical insight into an area of contemporary art practice 

• Demonstrate evidence of a breadth of research and the ability to synthesise research findings 

• Be able to effectively analyse research findings to support critical and aesthetic judgements 

• Demonstrate the ability to organise and present a written study and a presentation of practical work according to the course requirements.

Additional outcomes:

Students will recognise the relevance of their research in terms of its application to their role as artist teacher and its potential to inform classroom practice.

Outline content:

This module will enable students to attain a high level of supervised independent enquiry and research into an area of contemporary art in the 21st century and relate it directly to their personal art practice. It will enable students to identify and discuss the plurality of current art making, and emerging generic characteristics. It will require students to view such work critically   and apply, as appropriate, the formal and critical language of art through reading relevant research material including books and journals on contemporary art; exhibition catalogues and electronic sources.

Global context:

An international context will be considered.

A written assignment of 2,500 words 

Formative assessment methods:

A sample of writing (1,000 words approx) will be used to give formative feedback on writing style, organisation and referencing. 

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Resubmission during the summer resit period. 

Additional Costs (specified where applicable):

• Required text books: Additional costs will vary according to the choice of texts used. Students should expect to spend in the region of £10.00 in order to complete this module.


• Printing and binding: Occasional printing of materials, although photocopies of materials will be provided in the teaching sessions. Students will need to provide a printed copy of their assessment. Library printing costs are 5p for B/W page and 15p for colour page
