Summary module description:
In this part practical module, students will work individually in the studios developing personal art practice using traditional and non-traditional art materials, and digital technology as appropriate. Through a period of sustained independent and shared practice, students will articulate intentions and elaborate personal meanings as indicated within their developing work.
The accompanying theory programme will introduce students to specific issues in art (including gender and cultural), and highlight post second world war social changes and events which have underpinned trends in art and continue to inform and influence art practice and art education today.
Aims:
• To enable students to focus specifically on the independent development of their art practice
• To facilitate the communication and expression of personal ideas through art practice
• To further develop understanding and use of the formal languages of art
• To develop an awareness and understanding of the distinctive characteristics of Modernist, Postmodernist and contemporary practices and principles in art
• To further develop and consolidate oral communication skills through individual presentations and group discussions
• To identify the potential of students’ personal practice to inform classroom practice
• To further develop the students’ understanding of their potential role as artist teacher
Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this module, students will:
• Communicate and express concepts through sustained and independent art practice in a variety of mediums and using a range of techniques
• Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the distinctive characteristics of Modernist and Postmodernist practices and principles in Art,
• Demonstrate an increased breadth and knowledge of the issues and debates within the fields of contemporary art
• Demonstrate the ability to draw upon contemporary art practice to inform their role as artist teacher
Additional outcomes:
The module provides the opportunity for students to continue to develop and inform their own art practice through an engagement with contemporary issues in art.
Outline content:
This module will continue to facilitate the students’ developing art practices as artist teachers. It will also introduce students to a range of issues and developments which have influenced the course of contemporary art from the mid twentieth century to the present day.
In this context feminism, cultural identity and notions of postmodernism and the avant-garde
will be introduced and debated.
Global context:
There will be some research into the international practice of art and artists
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The part practical programme will incorporate lead lectures and seminars, directed reading and guided independent research and individual and group tutorials with tutors. Students will also undertake independent research visits to galleries and museums.

Resubmission during the summer resit period.

- Printing and binding: Occasional printing of materials, although photocopies of materials will be provided in the teaching sessions.
- Students will need to provide a printed copy of their assessment. Library printing costs are 5p for B/W page and 15p for colour page
