Summary module description:

The ethos of the module will be to look at education for sustainable development both as an active citizen and an educator, within the context of increasing consumption and diminishing resources. You will explore some emerging policies and practices for education for sustainable futures in a range of settings; you will consider theories and how they have the potential to help understandings of what is happening, and to make more logical, informed decisions about the best way to organise the educational process, manage controversial issues in educational settings, develop futures education, conduct enquiries in social settings and work within ethical frameworks when researching issues related to education for sustainable development.


Aims:

This module is an introduction to the field of sustainable education, which aims to develop students’ understanding and awareness of current practice through exploration of key concepts, discussion and debate.


Assessable learning outcomes:


  • Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of key theories and concepts in the field of education for sustainable futures

  • Identify and explore the significance of competing theories, perspectives, values and practices in relation to education for sustainable futures and global citizenship

  • Investigate a diversity of approaches to addressing issues of sustainable development within specific contexts


Additional outcomes:


  • Work confidently as both an independent learner and in collaboration with others as part of a team

  • Demonstrate awareness of relevant ethical issues and be able to discuss these in relation to personal beliefs and values


Outline content:


  • Key theories and concepts in the field of education for sustainable development including holistic approaches, environmental education, alternative futures, development education, transformation and wellbeing, controversial issues, ethics and values.

  • Introduction to selected theories and concepts in the field of global citizenship

  • Exploration of contextually and historically situated economic, ecological, technological cultural and educational policies, perspectives and practices related to education for sustainable development and global citizenship.

  • Identification and engagement with local, national and/or global organisations working in these fields, including consideration of work-related learning opportunities.


Global context:

This module will consider a range of issues within a global context.

Specialist equipment is not required.
