Summary module description:

This module requires students to demonstrate an appreciation of the commercial aspects of organisational effectiveness.  In addition, they will gain an awareness of qualitive and quantitative research techniques to support investigations in a business environment


Aims:

In the module, students will apply methods of enquiry to help them understand commercial challenges in their organisation.  They will be supported to reflect on the sufficiency of evidence for decision making.



The module aims to prepare students to:




  1. Have an awareness of commercial management skills.

  2. Apply knowledge and awareness of how a procurement process moves through key stages

  3. Have an awareness of legal issues in relation to commercial management.

  4. Have an awareness of health and safety requirements.

  5. Develop problem solving and decision-making capabilities in a business environment through the utilisation of quantitative and qualitative research techniques.

  6. Reflect critically on the mechanisms to collect evidence required to address a problem and reflect on the sufficiency of evidence for decision making.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module the student will be able:




  1. To explain the use of commercial management within an organisational context.

  2. Identify the components of a procurement process.

  3. Demonstrate an awareness of legal issues in relation to commercial management.

  4. Work with data and people to demonstrate a capacity for problem solving.


Additional outcomes:

Students should demonstrate how they have:




  1. Ensured engagement with relevant stakeholders in a professional and inclusive manner.

  2. Demonstrated adaptability and agility to changing organisational needs.

  3. Engaged with colleagues and stakeholders within their organisation and developed communications skills.



 


Outline content:

The module will support students to assess and critique a commercial management process including a consideration of any procurement implications and associated health & safety issues.  They will also gain an appreciation of the use of quantitative and qualitative research techniques to support the investigation.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module content is delivered through a combination of taught sessions, supported by key reading from texts and other sources, practical activities for each topic with group and cohort discussion. In addition, on-line support material will also be provided.  The student will be required to prepare a reflective commentary on their personal learning and implications for future practice.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

An individual written assignment of 2,500 words.  To be submitted once module study is complete.


Formative assessment methods:

Will be embedded in the learning path and workshop activities.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

The assignment must achieve a minimum mark of 40% to achieve a pass.


Reassessment arrangements:

Resubmission of the same assignment based on formative feedback.  One re-submission allowed, capped at 40%.  Resubmission period is in accordance with the arrangements laid out in the programme guide issued to each student.
