Summary module description:

To give students experience of working in a professional environment and to aid development of a range of transferable skills relevant to a wide range of careers. 

Aims:

To give students experience of working in a professional environment and to aid development of a range of transferable skills relevant to a wide range of careers. 

Assessable learning outcomes:

Students will satisfactorily complete a working placement. The placements need to be carefully selected on the basis of an agreed programme of work acceptable to both the home university and the external partner.

Additional outcomes:

Students will develop an understanding of the workings of a professional environment. Students will become competent in key professional skills such as team working, problem solving, and oral and written communication.

Students will be able to prepare written reports, give oral presentations and be able to discuss their work in a scholarly manner.

Outline content:

Year-long placement. 

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

One-year placement at a professional host; meetings with academic and external supervisor.

This module is assessed on a pass/fail basis.



It is not possible to retake this module as it involves a placement that cannot be repeated.

Formative assessment methods:

All students will have three meetings with their academic supervisor during their placement, at least one of which will involve a site visit lasting approximately half-a-day. During these visits the student will present their work and be able to discuss this with their academic supervisor.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

Students will satisfactorily complete their working placement to the standards set by the chemical industry. This module is assessed on a pass/fail basis by no later than mid August.

Reassessment arrangements:
It is not possible to retake this module as it involves an industrial placement that cannot be repeated.

Computers and devices with a particular specification: Required as access to on-line communication will be essential

Travel, accommodation and subsistence: Could be substantial due to the nature of the year.
