Summary module description:

This module will provide students with a common foundation in transferrable skills relevant to studying in an academic context. Attendance is compulsory.

Aims:

Students will gain experience in key skills applicable across the social sciences: Using the library, assignment writing, referencing skills and avoiding accidental plagiarism, how to present with confidence, team-working, academic reading and using Blackboard.

Assessable learning outcomes:

This is a compulsory module, but is not formally assessed. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. Use the library and Blackboard with confidence


2. Understand how to write in various styles, including essays and reports; with the ability to reference sources in an appropriate manner.


3. Have gained techniques to help with presentations and working in a group.


4. Understand the strategies for effective selecting and reading of academic texts
   
    

Additional outcomes:

Students will have used Socrative student app to take part in quizzes and polls.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module will mostly be delivered through guided seminars with practice of key skills through worked and subject examples.

This module is not assessed. Students will be expected to participate fully and may have to do some preparatory work.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
