Ancient Rome - digital reconstruction

Work to develop the outline of a book drawing on Dr Matthew Nicholls' digital model of ancient Rome.

The Placement Project

The aim is to produce material for a Cambridge University press book on ancient Rome (for which a contract exists) based on Dr Nicholls' large model of ancient Rome.Depending on the aptitudes of the student(s) involved and the needs of the project, there will also be scope for generating material to be used in future runs of the ancient Rome MOOC planned for release in the spring.

Tasks

Depending on their skills and interests: generating still and moving digital images from the model of Rome; producing illustrative material for the book in e.g. illustrator or Photoshop; researching and fact checking content and liaising with Dr Nicholls and/or the publisher to propose age layouts, contents, and pictures.

Skills, knowledge and experience required

Different skills combinations are possible. Inexpert in DTP would be welcome - skills in Illustrator, Photoshop, or similar packages would be useful for creating imagery. 3D modeling skills (SketchUp, Lumion, Cinema 4D) would also be helpful. Additionally, or alternatively, an expertise in Roman history would be useful for fact checking and research tasks.

Skills which will be developed during the placement

Book layout and design; knowledge of Roman history and topography; experience of 3D software packages and image creation/manipulation.

Place of Work

Mostly HumSS, but if candidates have own computer some work can be done at home and in libraries.
