The Placement Project

This project feeds into a broader socioeconomic impact assessment cluster of the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) funded Social and Environmental Trade-offs in African Agriculture (Sentinel) project. The project aims to explore and develop better ways of managing trade-offs among socioeconomic and environmental objectives in Ethiopia, Ghana and Zambian agriculture. The University of Reading acts as a Co-Investigator through Professor Elizabeth JZ Robinson of the Applied Economics and Marketing (AEM) Department, School of Agriculture, Policy and Development (SAPD). This placement project will contribute to answering one of the research questions for the cluster, led by the University of Reading: “What are the factors (land policies, institutions and property rights) that currently influence the management of land use trade-offs at community level?” Output from this project alongside analysis of the other 2 country case studies will inform further stakeholder interviews across the three countries and act as a first stage of the Q-methodology to be employed for this research. This project meets all the three criteria for assessing UROP proposals for bursary support as follows: a. It provides placement students the opportunity to develop proposal development skills, content analysis, and analytical techniques using Nvivo analysis software. b. The project contributes significantly to answering a broader Sentinel research question as above. c. The project increases the wider awareness of the AEM and SAPD through the placement advertisement, student engagement and review publication.

Tasks

Review and analyses of land policy documents. Week 1: Develop review proposals with aim and methodology. Week 2: Collate relevant policy documents based on agreed criteria and share with supervisor. Weeks 3-5: Analyse collated documents, discuss findings and feedback to supervisor. Week 6: Effect any corrections and complete placement.
