Cataloguing Works on Paper in the University Collection

To prepare a catalogue of the works on paper in the History of Art Department.The researcher will provide a detailed catalogue of the Old Master and twentieth drawings acquired by the University in the 1950s and also an important collection of works by the American modernist Max Weber left to the University in the 1960s. They will collate existinginformation about the collection and conduct further research on the provenance and the place of the work within each artists's oeuvre.

The Placement Project

The University owns an important collection of Old Master drawings including a drawing attributed to Rubens, some twentieth drawings including ones by Gwen John and Spencer Gore, and a highly important collection by the modernist Max Weber. A research assistant is sought to help in the preparation of a catalogue of the collection.

Tasks

Using existing records of acquisition,you will photograph each work , collate the available information about each work and conduct further research on the provenance of each work. In addition you research the literature on each artist represented in the collection, and prepare information for a catalogue entry to be written in consultation with Professor Robins.

Skills, knowledge and experience required

The student should have a sound knowledge of the field and an understanding of the workings of a catalogue raisonne[sic].A knowledge of the workings of a digital camera and computing skills are essential.

Skills which will be developed during the placement

The student will acquire basic cataloguing skills which are essential for working in a museum and writing exhibition catalogues.The student will be listed as the second author in the online catlogue and as a research assistant in any further publication on Max Weber.
