Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants
Thirtieth Session, The Hague, Netherlands, 9-13 March 1998
The Commitee:
- agreed on the final components of the Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA);
- invited additional comments on the draft GSFA Tables for antioxidants, preservatives, stabilizers, thickeners and sweeteners;
- forwarded proposed draft GSFA Tables for acidity regulators, anticaking agents, antifoaming agents, bulking agents, colours, colour retention agents, emulsifiers, flavour enhancers, flour treatment agents, foaming agents, firming agents, glazing agents, humectants, propellants and raising agents to the Executive Committee for preliminary adoption;
- agreed to return the proposed draft Guidelines for the Estimation of Appropriate Levels of Use of Food Additives for revision;
- agreed to specific criteria for resolving concerns regarding technological justification and need for the use of food additives in the context of the GSFA;
- agreed to further consider at its next session methodology and principles for exposure assessment in the context of the Codex General Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Foods;
- recommended Commission adoption of 169 specifications as Codex Advisory Specifications;
- endorsed permitted maximum levels for food additives in the Codex Standard for Food Grade Salt;
- forwarded amendments to the International Numbering System to the Commission for adoption;
- forwarded Draft Maximum Levels for Aflatoxin M1 in Milk (0.05 µg/kg) and for Total Aflatoxins in Peanuts intended for further processing (15µg/kg) to the Commission for final adoption;
- decided to request comments on proposed draft maximum levels for patulin and tin in various foodstuffs;
- decided to further consider position papers related to ochratoxin A, patulin and zearalenone at its next Session;
- forwarded comments on the draft Code of Practice for Good Animal Feeding to the Executive Committee;
- decided to request comments on the proposed draft Code of Practice for Source Directed Measures to Reduce the
- Contamination of Food with Chemicals;
- decided to seek additional information on arsenic, cadmium, dioxins, lead and tin for consideration at its next Session;
- decided to request comments on a proposed draft revision to the Codex Standard for Food Grade Salt (Packaging, Transportation and Storage), and;
- decided to request further comments and amendments to Methods of Analysis for Food Additives and Contaminants, the International Numbering System, the Inventory of Processing Aids and the Priority List.
