A Look into Freedom Vote (Fall-Winter 1964) & COFO Mississippi Project (Fall ‘64- Spring ‘65) Applications.
Between the summer of 2024, and now, Caitlin has been able to interact with primary source documents from the Freedom Summer initiative and COFO’s Mississippi Project from the winter of 1964 to the spring of 1965. Initiatives that impacted the Mississippi Civil Rights movement greatly. This position was facilitated by Jan Hillegas, of the Freedom Information Library Service Project, who owns the private collection, and Dr. Christina Thomas of Jackson State University. Working with these documents, Caitlin gained knowledge on archival digitisation, cataloguing, and research beyond the primary documents. Over the past few months, Caitlin and Dr. Thomas have been working closely to learn more about the applicants from both civil rights initiatives that expand beyond the primary sources. This presentation was recently presented at the Mississippi Museum Conference this September. Caitlin will speak on her work in the archive, the information gained, and the challenges faced working on this project.
