Event Information
In 2024, Professor Phoenix won a decisive victory against The Open University. The employment tribunal found that, over a period of two years, Professor Phoenix had been harassed, bullied, discriminated against, wrongfully and unfairly constructively dismissed and had been victimised post-employment based on her gender-critical beliefs. The Open University for their part argued that behaviour of itself and its employees was covered by academic freedom and freedom of speech. There are several aspects of the case and the judgment that have direct relevance to the workplace culture of universities and leadership. Join us for an evening of an “In Conversation” style discussion about what this judgement tells us about workplace cultures, academic freedom, freedom of speech and university leadership. Joining Professor Phoenix will be Akua Reindorf (KC) and author of The Reindorf Report and Annie Powell (Partner at Leigh Day) who represented Professor Phoenix. The event will be opened by Professor Robert van de Noort (VC University of Reading) and chaired by Professor James Devenney (Head of the School of Law, University of Reading). This is ticketed event and although free, you must register your place.
