Eligibility to graduate
In order to be eligible for graduation you need to check two things:
- Your results
- You don't have tuition fee debt
The easiest way to check the status of your account and pay any outstanding debts is online via the Student Payments Website.
You will not be able to graduate and will be automatically deferred to a future graduation ceremony if:
- you have not passed and need to resit.
- you have not passed, but have qualified for an exit award, which you have not yet accepted.
- you have an open academic misconduct case in the lead up to Graduation.
For any other reason the Exams Office do not have a final result for you by the dates set out on the Key Deadlines page.
Additional Information
You can submit an appeal against your result if you consider that you have grounds supported by relevant evidence.
If you have a pass or higher, you can still graduate while your appeal is pending. However you will not receive your degree certificate at the ceremony. Instead, you will receive a letter outlining your current status, and your degree certificate will be issued once your appeal is resolved.
If you appeal and your underlying result is a fail, you will not be able to attend a graduation ceremony whilst the appeal is ongoing. In this case, your graduation will automatically be deferred to the next set of ceremonies.
If you believe that your performance in examinations has been affected by an exceptional circumstance or if you have missed one or more examinations due to an exceptional circumstance (i.e. ill health / significant adverse personal or family circumstances), you will be able to submit a Post-Results Exceptional Circumstances (PREC).
Further guidance about post-results exceptional circumstance requests is available on Essentials.
This may affect your ability to graduate at the upcoming ceremonies.
The Doctoral Examinations Officer, based in the Doctoral and Researcher College (deo@reading.ac.uk), must receive confirmation of your final result (after viva, corrections and examiner sign off) by the date specified in the Key Deadlines page or you will not be able to graduate and you will be deferred to a future graduation ceremony.
Also, the University will withhold your degree certificate if you have not submitted an electronic copy of your thesis by the deadline to the University Library via the CentAUR system (centaur@reading.ac.uk).
If you owe a tuition fee debt of £50 or greater to the University you will not:
- be able to graduate or attend a Graduation Ceremony
- receive your award certificate
- be issued with any academic reference.
If you owe less than £50 in tuition fees you will be able to attend your Graduation ceremony, however the University will withhold your degree certificate, and you will not be issued with any academic reference.
