Month 6 – Mock interviews
Interviews are a crucial part of the selection process, so practising your interview technique will give you the best chance of securing a job in the future. Even if you haven’t got an interview coming up it is great to get some practice. Your mentor will have been involved in interviews in some way or another in their career, so they are a great person to get support from.
As well as any advice your mentor can offer, the online interview resources on the University career page contain lots of different resources which you can use either with or without your mentor to sharpen your interview skills. You can discuss your new skills, tips and tricks and interview preparation process with your mentor too!
Try looking on job websites for real current jobs in the industry you are interested in and gain some understanding of the types of skills employers want. You can find jobs advertised on:
You can use job descriptions as templates, asking your mentor to create a mock interview based off of them. This is a great way to get some authentic practice in. Mock interviews can be daunting, but try to remember this is a really valuable experience, as your mentor can provide guidance on how to improve ahead of the real thing!
Remember you can access to all 10 talking points to feel free to look through them all, find topics that interest you most or mix up the order however suits you and your mentor.
