Graphic Communication and Design
Our course brings together creativity, curiosity, and innovation. It is ideal if you want to apply your visual abilities and scholarly strengths to the challenges of graphic communication and design.
The Department of Typography and Graphic Communication offers you a distinctive approach to a design degree.
Our dynamic course builds skills in thinking critically, analytically, and reflectively, enabling you to see design’s ‘big picture’ and its essential details. You will pursue design as cross-media practice, recognising how history and theory inform design, and conducting professional practice.
We will equip you for a career in design by combining a strong practical base with an understanding of what makes good design succeed. We take you below the surface to ask questions about design’s deeper purpose. We also provide you with access to a high-profile alumni network of design professionals.
Our curriculum is constantly evolving, informed by staff research, innovations in design practice, a drive to use design for social change, and an understanding of how our students learn best. We welcome students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds, whose experiences and abilities enrich our design community.
Your studies will integrate practice, history and theory through:
- small-group, collaborative studio teaching with an emphasis on typographic excellence
- a supportive, highly interactive learning experience
- solving real-life graphic communication challenges.
Our department explores different ways of engaging with design so that you will become a well-rounded ‘thinking designer’. You'll develop the ability to express your design ideas confidently and graduate with a diverse and relevant portfolio.
Our graphic communication and design graduates are in high demand because we teach a combination of creative, production and client-facing skills, which help to prepare you for industry after graduating.
We have close links with industry. Employers such as IBM Design and Oxford University Press are actively engaged with our teaching and offer individual feedback on student projects.
