Linguistics
Language is at the heart of human life, crucial to our understanding of ourselves as individuals, as members of society, and as a species.
Study this most complex form of human behaviour at the University of Reading.
You can choose to study linguistics within either the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, or the School of Humanities.
Adopt a psychological approach to linguistics
In the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, you’ll explore the science behind language. Many of our staff are practising speech and language therapists – giving you direct insight into the latest developments in the clinical aspects of linguistics.
100% of the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences’ research impact has been classed ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ (Research Excellence Framework 2021, combining 4* and 3* submissions – Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience).
The School is also home to the Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism, that researches multilingualism, language and literacy.
Connect linguistic theory to practice
In the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics, you’ll investigate topics such as language acquisition, teaching, and its use in different social contexts, including workplaces, political speeches, media communication and social media interactions.
You’ll develop your knowledge of grammar, phonetics and discourse analysis, and understand how language and linguistics relates to contemporary social issues, including politics, migration, gender and sexuality.
The Department of English Language and Linguistics has more than 50 years of excellence in the field and is the first to offer a linguistics degree in the UK. 100% of its research is of international standing (Research Excellence Framework 2021, combining 4*, 3* and 2* submissions – Modern Languages and Linguistics).
