Dr Kirsty Kliem
  • Co-Head of Department of Animal Sciences (with Dr Caroline Rymer).
  • Module convenor and contributor, teaching topics including undergraduate Bioveterinary Science in practice, animal nutrition, growth and reproduction, and veterinary health and disease.
  • Research on improving the health quality of primarily milk and dairy products (but also monogastric-derived food products and ruminant-derived meat).
  • Research on nutritional physiology of domestic animals, and the effect of nutritional intervention on animal health.
  • Supervision and academic tutoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Member of the SAPD Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Self-Assessment Team for Athena Swan.

Areas of interest

Research interests include:

  • Improving the health quality of ruminant products (meat, milk and dairy products) by changing the ruminant diet.
  • Effect of dietary interventions on the health and welfare of the dairy cow.
  • Development of biomarkers in milk for the detection of dairy cow disease.
  • Presence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in livestock.
  • In vitro digestion assessment of animal feeds; use of in vitro digestion models to determine effects on gut microbiome.

  • Nurul Fitri Sari (PhD: Additives of plant origin as modulators of rumen methane production)
  • Ahmed Musheer Abdulrahman (PhD: Evaluation of fermented sunflower meal in broiler chicken diets)
  • Claire Bailey (PhD based at Aberystwyth University; Cows, cannabinoids and terpenes: screening hemp-derived compounds for anti-inflammatory properties to tackle inflammatory disorders of the dairy cow).

Teaching

In addition to module convening and classroom teaching, my interests include:

  • Enhancing undergraduate experience through teaching practical laboratory and research skills
  • Supervising laboratory-based undergraduate independent research projects and postgraduate students.
  • Increasing awareness of employment opportunities via contacts/visits with relevant employment sectors.
