Does the University accept Enhanced DBS clearance through the Update Service for a teacher training or early years course?
If you have an existing Enhanced DBS certificate and it is registered for the DBS Update Service, we may be able to accept your existing Enhanced DBS certificate through the DBS Update Service provided that all of the following necessary criteria are met:
- The certificate is registered for the DBS Update Service, and you have paid the relevant online subscription fee
- The certificate shows all names you have been known by
- The certificate shows ‘Child Workforce’ as the ‘Position applied for’
- The certificate states ‘DBS Fee Charged’ (Please note: If the certificate states ‘No DBS Fee Charged’, unfortunately, it cannot be used to obtain clearance for a teacher training or early years course)
- The certificate states ‘None Recorded’ against the Children's Barred List information and ‘Not Requested’ against the Adults' Barred List information (Please note: If the certificate states ‘None Recorded’ against both the Children's and Adults' Barred List information, unfortunately, it cannot be used to obtain clearance for a teacher training or early years course)
These are compliance regulations set by the UK government, and we cannot accept any DBS checks that do not meet all of these necessary criteria.
I have an existing Enhanced DBS certificate, but it does not meet one or more of the necessary criteria. What do I need to do?
You will need to apply for a new Enhanced DBS certificate through the University.
I have an existing Enhanced DBS certificate, which is registered for the DBS Update Service and meets all of the necessary criteria specified. Will this be acceptable, or will I need to apply for a new Enhanced DBS certificate through the University?
Please note, we cannot confirm whether we can accept an existing Enhanced DBS certificate through the DBS Update Service any earlier than 6 months before the start date of the course.
If you would like us to check whether your existing Enhanced DBS certificate can be accepted for the teacher training or early years course, please email the Admissions Support team no earlier than 6 months before the start date of the course to:
- Provide your permission for the University to check the status of your existing Enhanced DBS certificate through the DBS Update Service
- Arrange a time to bring your existing Enhanced DBS certificate to the Admissions Office at the University as, according to the DBS Update Service guidance, we are required to see the original certificate before carrying out a status check
Once you have provided your consent and brought your existing Enhanced DBS certificate to the Admissions Office, we should then be able to carry out the status check and confirm whether your existing Enhanced DBS certificate can be accepted for the teacher training course or whether you will need to apply for a new Enhanced DBS certificate through the University.
If we confirm that your existing Enhanced DBS certificate can be accepted for the teacher training course, you will need to ensure that your registration and subscription with the DBS Update Service remains valid for the duration of the course, as your placement schools may also ask for permission to check your Enhanced DBS certificate through the DBS Update Service after you have started your training.
