Who Should You Ask To Be A Referee?
Please choose people who will be able to comment on your academic work and suitability for the programme. We normally expect that your referee(s) will be members of academic staff. For programmes that are closely aligned with a profession or industry, though, a professional reference (from a relevant placement or work supervisor) instead of an academic reference may be more appropriate.
If you are currently studying, or have recently completed your studies, your referees must be an academic member of staff who has taught you on your most recent course. If you have been out of education for more than five years, we understand that it can be difficult to obtain academic references. You may prefer to nominate a referee who can comment on your professional experience.
We are not able to accept 'character references', such as those from friends, colleagues or family members.
References should also come from an individual's professional email address e.g. we cannot accept references sent or uploaded from personal accounts such as hotmail/ gmail/ yahoo etc.
Please note for most of our Postgraduate Taught programmes (Masters) we only require one reference as part of your application. We may, however, ask for a second reference if we make you an offer of a place. For our Postgraduate Research Programmes (PhD/ DBA/ Ed D) we require two references as part of your application.
