Funding for living expenses:

Bursaries

The Department for Education is providing a tax-free bursary of £29,000 to eligible students starting courses in September 2025, to help with  living expenses during training.   You do not need to apply for the bursary and it will be paid automatically to eligible candidates in 10 monthly instalments from mid-October.

Scholarships

Alternatively high-quality candidates can apply for an Institute of Physics scholarship of £31,000.  Like the bursary this is payable in 10 monthly instalments from Mid-October and is to help with your living expenses.  If your scholarship application is successful you will receive these payments instead of the bursary.

Course tuition fees:

The tuition fee for courses starting in September 2025 is £25,850 and you will need to have additional funding or financial sponsorship to cover these fees.  Tuition Fees are payable in two instalments (50% when you enrol at the beginning of September and 50% at the beginning of January).

The training bursary, scholarship and international relocation payments are to help cover your living expenses during your training (including travel expenses to placement schools).  You cannot use the bursary or scholarship payments to pay your tuition fees as the first instalment of your fees will be payable before you receive any bursary or scholarship.  If you require a student visa to enter the UK you will also need to show UKVI evidence that you have sufficient personal funds to cover the full tuition fee as part of your visa application.
