Thistles can either be cut down with a scythe, or bruised with a spud or ‘grubber’ before the seed is formed. This thistle spud has a long wooden handle made from a stick of birch or hazel with the bark still on, and a flat metal head in the shape of a thistle with a cutting edge. The spud came from Mr T.
