Description
This is a hop sampler, used by merchants to extract a sample from a hop pocket to decide on the quality of a particular crop. It consists of two flat iron plates, which are pressed together to obtain the sample. The spring of the handle is adjusted by means of a screw. The sampler is stamped with the name 'Russell', and was probably manufactured in Farnham.

Letter, Ashton Booth of Willmer House Museum to Andrew Jewell, 7 July 1961 – ‘In case I have misinformed you in my last letter, I have to let you know Templer’s comments on Hop Samplers. // “…HART and RUSSELL were Farnham ironmongers. John Russell was a smith and ironmonger, late 18th – early 19th c. // Hart’s ironmongery was at 116–117 West Street from 1839–1906.’
