    This pole shave, also known as a rounder plane, was used in R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights shop in Eddington, Hungerford, for shaving down poles, spokes and ladder rungs. It consists of a rounded block of wood with two handles and a steel blade made by Isaac Greaves. Tools like this were usually home made.

    MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This tool was used in the Middletons' Wheelwrights' shop for shaving down poles, spokes, ladder rungs, etc. One end of the wood was held in a clamp, and the shave was swung round by its handles down the pole. // Other names for the shave are ROUNDER or NUG. // This shave consists of a rounded block of wood, with two handles and a blade set in the opening of the round groove into which the pole was put... The blade is made of steel, and was manufactured by Isaac Greaves.'
