Description
This is an oval basket, made of centre cane and chair cane, with a solid coiled base and open-work sides. The twisted cane was once dyed green but this has faded. It may have been used as a work basket, although its original use is not known. It may be Malaysian in origin.

Assembly. // Overall shape: Oval // Materials: Centre cane and chair cane core. Shaped centre cane. It has been given a square profile. // Base: Starts with a single core and extra element added to core on 6th round. Stitched with chair cane? Simple stitch. // Sides: 3 rows stitched oval rings up the side. Connected to base with same stitch. 3 rows of stitching holds fine centre cane loops. 5 rows of loops separated by cane oval bands stitched to band above and below. Oval bands differ in size and loops differ in size ? to achieve shaping required. // Border: 2 oval bands thinner than bands below. Inner band holds loops, then 2nd band sits outside the basket. Bound and wrapped with chair cane. // Handles: None // Lid: None // Dimensions: Base 25cm (length) x 15cm (width). Top 31.5cm (length) x 22cm (width).
