Description
This is a one gill measure (quarter of a pint) for domestic use. It is made of pewter and is shaped like a cup, with a handle. It has the Royal stamp of verification from Queen Victoria's reign, dating it to between 1837 and 1901.

Archival history
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Nothing is known of the origin of this measure. It is made of pewter and as probably for household use. It is shaped like a small cup, with a handle, and a base wider than the top. It is decoratively shaped and has turned lines round it. The word GILL is stamped just below the rim on one side of the handle and the verification mark VR on the other side. // The measure is 3.15 inches in eight and 2.65 inches in diameter across the base.', No Lavinia Smith No. recorded.
