Description
A gouge has a concave blade and is used with a lathe to make grooves and holes when turning wood. This gouge was used for scooping out cups, waists and circles of chair legs, and is known as a long, strong, turning gouge. The words 'Thos. ----- Cast Steel' are imprinted near the handle but the surname being illegible. It belonged to the uncle or father of Samuel Rockall, who came from a family of Chilterns chair bodgers in Turville Heath, Buckinghamshire.

LATHE TOOL<br>A gouge has a concave blade and is used with a lathe to make grooves and holes when turning wood. This gouge was used for scooping out cups, waists and circles of chair legs, and is known as a long, strong, turning gouge. MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This gouge belonged to the uncle or father of Mr. Samuel Rockall, a chair bodger of Turville Heath (Bucks). It was used for scooping out cups, waists and circles of chair legs, and is known as a long, strong, turning gouge. It has a narrow blade measuring only .3 inches across. The words Thos. ----- Cast Steel are imprinted near the handle, the surname being illegible. The blade is driven into the handle. The blade is 5.5 inches and the handle 4.5 inches in length.
